Early Indian people first settled along the Indus, Sarasvati, and Ganges Rivers. Most settlers clustered in the middle of the Sarasvati River. A big part of their jobs and daily life were controlled by the Caste System, a strict system of social stratification. There were four main social classes: Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras. Each class had its own duties. Brahmins' duties were to study and teach the Vedas. Warriors had to become skilled with weapons. Unfortunately, the Caste System meant that some people were much more favored than others. You are born into your class as a baby. Also, you can only marry somebody that is in your caste. Brahmans had the top spot, and the Shudras were the lowest. Over time, a fifth class developed called the untouchables. These peoples had jobs that were considered “dirty” or “lowly”. They often had their own villages or communities. They had restrictions, such as not going into specific temples or schools. Some other groups that were higher in the Caste system, avoided touching them, or even looking at them is some cases. The Caste System is just one example of how Hinduism affected daily life in India.
